Rosemary Essential Oil | Elise Marcus SalonGetting covered in bug bites may deter you from enjoying some of your favorite outdoor activities, especially at certain times of the day when these bugs seem to be at their peak, like dusk. You know, annoying bugs such as nats, mosquitoes and we can’t forget ticks. Ever enjoy an outdoor sports activity and catch a bug in your mouth? Not fun…not fun.

And how do you feel about bug sprays? Many people are not big fans of bug sprays due to their toxic nature. Elise Marcus Salon not only uses essential oils in the products they use but they also have many essential oil tips and  if you’re looking for a natural non-toxic way to repel insects when outdoors so you can enjoy outdoor activities, eat food outdoors minus pesky bugs, and enjoy fresh air without catching bugs in your mouth then consider trying essential oils.

Essential oils that act effectively to repel bugs when outdoors include:Aromatherapy Essential Geranium oil

  • Lavender
  • Eucalyptus
  • Tea Tree or Melaleuca Alternifolia
  • Peppermint
  • Rosemary
  • Basil
  • Thyme
  • Geranium Oil

It has been scientifically proven that most insects are repelled by the scents of essential oils. Essential oils not only act to repel insects, but they can effectively treat insect bites as well. These particular essential oils work to treat bug bites because they have antiseptic, anti-flammatory, and pain relieving properties.

To treat a bug bite with one of these oils, you’re going to apply 1-2 drops onto the bug bite or you can dilute the oil to a 50:50 concentration. For relief from itching and to reduce the possibility of infection, try peppermint or lavender.

How to Make Homemade Bug Spray:

Fill spray bottle (I used 8 ounce) 1/2 full with distilled or boiled waterVegetable Glycerine | Shop.com
Add witch hazel to fill almost to the top
Add 1/2 tsp vegetable glycerin if using – Vegetable Glycerine is a great vessel to help essential oils bind to whatever you spray them on (in this case, you).
Add 30-50 drops of essential oils to desired scent. The more oils you use, the stronger the spray will be. My personal favorite mix is: Rosemary, Clove, Tea Tree, Lavender, Cinnamon and Eucalyptus… it works great and smells good too!

My daughter likes to carry around a 3oz size in her purse and this is her recipe:

Combine the ingredients in a 3oz bottle…

30 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil
10 drops of Geranium Essential Oil
1 T vegetable glycerine
Fill to (almost) the top with H2O
Shake and apply as needed (at least every hour or so).
