Enjoy the Great Outdoors minus Unwanted Bug Bites

Now that the warm weather has finally arrived that you’ve more than likely waited for all winter long, I bet you can’t wait to get outdoors for some fresh air and sunlight. There’s just one catch, though. As we embrace this wonderful warm weather and look forward to summer, which is just around the corner, we’re now faced with the annoyance and dilemma of bugs when outdoors.

Rosemary Essential Oil | Elise Marcus SalonGetting covered in bug bites may deter you from enjoying some of your favorite outdoor activities, especially at certain times of the day when these bugs seem to be at their peak, like dusk. You know, annoying bugs such as nats, mosquitoes and we can’t forget ticks. Ever enjoy an outdoor sports activity and catch a bug in your mouth? Not fun…not fun.

Avoid Bug Bites Naturally when Outdoors with Essential Oils in St Joseph MN

And how do you feel about bug sprays? Many people are not big fans of bug sprays due to their toxic nature. Elise Marcus Salon not only uses essential oils in the products they use but they also have many essential oil tips and  if you’re looking for a natural non-toxic way to repel insects when outdoors so you can enjoy outdoor activities, eat food outdoors minus pesky bugs, and enjoy fresh air without catching bugs in your mouth then consider trying essential oils.

Essential oils that act effectively to repel bugs when outdoors include:Aromatherapy Essential Geranium oil

  • Lavender
  • Eucalyptus
  • Tea Tree or Melaleuca Alternifolia
  • Peppermint
  • Rosemary
  • Basil
  • Thyme
  • Geranium Oil

It has been scientifically proven that most insects are repelled by the scents of essential oils. Essential oils not only act to repel insects, but they can effectively treat insect bites as well. These particular essential oils work to treat bug bites because they have antiseptic, anti-flammatory, and pain relieving properties.

To treat a bug bite with one of these oils, you’re going to apply 1-2 drops onto the bug bite or you can dilute the oil to a 50:50 concentration. For relief from itching and to reduce the possibility of infection, try peppermint or lavender.

Whether you’re interested in treating bug bites naturally with essential oils in St Joseph MN, or to repel bugs, or both, essential oils are a non-toxic solution to a pesky problem. Cami at Elise Marcus Salon is a Shop.com consultant and you can find many affordable high quality essential oils at Elise Marcus Salon or you can order yourself through Shop.com and earn cashback!

You’ll need to locate the following ingredients. Here, I’ll link you directly to Shop.com so you can order and have them shipped directly to your door (you are very welcome). Oh, and don’t be worried by those prices. Essential oils go a loooooong way, so you’ll have plenty of batches you can make from this purchase and you will earn cashback!

How to Make Homemade Bug Spray:

Fill spray bottle (I used 8 ounce) 1/2 full with distilled or boiled waterVegetable Glycerine | Shop.com
Add witch hazel to fill almost to the top
Add 1/2 tsp vegetable glycerin if using – Vegetable Glycerine is a great vessel to help essential oils bind to whatever you spray them on (in this case, you).
Add 30-50 drops of essential oils to desired scent. The more oils you use, the stronger the spray will be. My personal favorite mix is: Rosemary, Clove, Tea Tree, Lavender, Cinnamon and Eucalyptus… it works great and smells good too!

My daughter likes to carry around a 3oz size in her purse and this is her recipe:

Combine the ingredients in a 3oz bottle…

30 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil
10 drops of Geranium Essential Oil
1 T vegetable glycerine
Fill to (almost) the top with H2O
Shake and apply as needed (at least every hour or so).

Facial Spa Treatment in St. Joseph MN

Experience Radiant, Vibrant Skin with a Luxurious Facial

A luxurious facial spa experience should become a regular part of anyone’s beauty regimen in order to maintain a complexion that permeates a youthful glow.

Treating yourself to monthly or bi-monthly facials ensures your skin is protected against weather elements because when you enjoy regular facials the pores become smaller and smaller which end up blocking environmental toxins from entering. Lavender Hot Towel Wrap Facial Spa in St. Joseph MN

A luxurious facial spa experience and maintaining your beauty regimen at Elise Marcus Salon in St. Joseph MN is not to be missed. You will pampered with a hot towel lavender wrap which is both relaxing and sumptuous followed by a gentle cleanse designed to prepare your skin for the next step which is exfoliation.

Exfoliation of the skin removes the upper layer of skin and in doing so brings with it dry flakes that are essentially dead skin cells along with dirt and toxins. With this removal the skin underneath is deemed both clean and free of dirt, unclogging pores and aids in reducing acne breakouts. (extractions are performed as needed)

Facial Spa Treatment in St. Joseph MNAn invigorating facial massage follows which creates swooning customers as well as increasing the blood flow, relieve stress and discouraging wrinkles. The swirling finger action stimulates the blood vessels producing an overall smooth appearance by eliminating puffiness and finally relaxing facial muscles.

The final step when receiving a Elise Marcus Salon facial spa treatment is the gentle application of a rich moisturizer.

And there you have it – this quintessential treatment that not only makes you feel refreshed and more vibrant but makes you look fresh faced and radiant.

The weather is getting warmer and, for most of us, that means being outside more with less clothes on. YES!!! Picnics, camping, days spent at the beach. We can’t wait to feel the warm sun on our skin. This is usually the time we start using sunscreen to protect our skin from getting burned. I found some very interesting information about sunscreen and coconut oil that I would like to share with you.

Did you know that coconut oil was the original suntan/sunscreen lotion? Coconut oil has many amazing health benefits and islanders have been using it for sun protection for generations. Coconut oil was originally used in suntan and sunscreen lotions but was eventually replaced with chemicals. Sunscreens today use chemicals that disrupt the hormone system and this is definitely not good for anyone, especially children.

A little FYI, the SPF rating on a sunscreen measures how much UV radiation is blocked. Supposedly, the higher the SPF the greater the effect. You might think that SPF 30 is twice as good as SPF 15 and SPF 60 is Twice as good as SPF 30, but that’s not how it works. SPF 15 blocks about 94 percent of UV radiation, SPF 30 blocks about 97 percent and SPF 45 blocks about 98 percent. SPF ratings above this are really meaningless. It’s just more chemicals. Yuck!!

Coconut oil actually has a very low SPF. Testing has shown that it blocks about 20 percent of UV radiation. This is actually a good thing because adequate natural sun exposure is very beneficial and healing. Our bodies need exposure to sun to balance hormones and produce vitamin D. I’m not going to go into everything that we need vitamin D for, you can look that up yourself. But, coconut oil protects the body from sunburn and skin cancer by preventing free-radical damage from exposure to the sun.

That’s not to say that you should just slather on some coconut oil and go bake out in the sun for hours. NO WAY!!! If you have been covered up for the last 6 months or so, you need to gradually get your skin used to the sunshine. You can start by applying coconut oil to all exposed skin and being outside for a half hour. Just to the point where your skin might get a little pink ( for the pale skinned people ). Naturally, the more color you have to your skin the easier the transition will be. Gradually work up to being outside for longer periods of time.

I love helping my clients find new ways to be healthier and more natural. If you have any questions you can contact me, Cami Theisen at Elise Marcus Salon.

Easy Evening Look in Four Simple Steps | Skincare in Saint Joseph, MN | Elise Marcus Salon

Wednesday I suggested a day-time natural look, so today I am taking an alternative route! Our inspirations for this look are Ronald McDonald and Tammy Faye Baker…

JUST KIDDING! A lesson can be learned from them, though.  Even if you wish to put on a lot of make-up, try to be sure to not put on too much.  No matter how much you think you can handle, every body has a limit.

Before

1. The first step is again just to cover up any major skin inconsistencies.  Women are notorious for being their own worst critic.  That being said, if you think you need twelve layers of foundation for perfect skin, you may only need one.  “Perfect skin” is not the idea with this step, though, we are looking for just enough to smooth out the look.

2. The next step is to put on a fun color of eye shadow.  “Fun” meaning teal, gold, purple, hot pink, neon yellow, etc. basically everything but browns, dark greens and other natural colors.  Apply this evenly on the eye, extending the farthest with color to the crease of the eye lid. For some extra UMPH use two colors and blend them about half way.

3.  Using the technique from a few days ago, apply eye liner on both the top and bottom (water line is optional).  Some colors you could use for eye liner are the classic black, bright, edgy colors.  Again, just try to avoid naturals.

After

4. Then add mascara! Two to three coats on the top, and the usual single coat on the bottom.  The reason we want to add more mascara for this look is because we are adding more make-up over all, which may drown out your eye lashes, so we just want to add a little more to side step that fiasco.

Natural Make-Up Look | Skincare In St Joseph, Mn | Skincare Near St Cloud, Mn | Elise Marcus Salon

Make-up is meant to enhance your natural and inner beauty, not to cover it up. That is why I love natural make-up looks so much.  This one is just a few simple steps, so it is totally adaptable for your own style and interpretation.

Before

1. The first step is to use a little cover up to smooth over any blemishes which are clearly apparent.  This may be acne, natural redness or (for me, too) some old scarring.  If you are comfortable with it, only use a cover up solution, or small amounts of foundation to camouflage these little blemishes.  Try to avoid using foundation all over because we are going for a less-is-more look.

2. Cover your lids with a nude color eye shadow.  This will allow for a small amount of coverage, while still creating a smooth and polished eye look.

3. Using the technique described in Monday’s blog, apply a small amount to the tops of your lids (the bottom is optional).  If you can, use an eye liner color which is from the “natural” colors.  This would be something like a brown or soft black, as opposed to magenta or gold.

4. Apply one-two coats of mascara to the top set of eye lashes, depending on how light your eye lashes are naturally.  If you normally have blonde eye lashes, consider only one coat, so it does not get too dark and over bearing. No matter the color of your eye lashes, I suggest you never apply more than one coat to the bottom lashes because it gives the eye an overall awkward looking shape.

5. The final step is to add a smidge of blush on the “apples” of your cheeks.  Find a color which shows up on your face, but does not make you look like Raggedy Anne.  This should be a lighter shade, like a pale pink or a matte tan.  When you smile, there is a “puffed up” area of cheek.  Using a big, fluffy brush, apply your blush in swift circles from this raised pile toward the edge of our face.  The line made should be angled toward the top of your ear.

After

Remember that you are beautiful with or without make-up, so do not be afraid to use less of it.  You know what they say, less IS more.
