Now lets talk about fragrant oils for your hair | Elise Marcus Salon | Haircut In St. Joseph MN |

Now lets talk about fragrant oils for your hair.

The best fragrances to use are the natural ones (synthetic fragrances can damage hair) and that is why pure essential oils, diluted in carrier oils ( jojoba oil , olive oil, coconut oil , castor oil, vitamin E oil , avocado oil and nut oils) are great when you want to add a nice scent to your hair. Put a few drops on your comb or in your final hair rinse water or in your favorite carrier oil and your hair will smell great while being conditioned.

Essential Oils For Haircare | Elise Marcus Salon | Hair Salon In St. Joseph MN

Essential Oils (EOs) is an oil that is considered essential in the sense that it carries a distinctive scent (essence) of the plant from which the oil is extracted from. Essential oils are volatile, and are usually derived from the non-seed parts of the plants. Essential oils are generally extracted by distillation.

Essential oils are very useful in homemade hair care products and many of them are very good to treat scalp conditions such as tea tree oil for dandruff, rosemary to grow hair faster, lavender for dry scalp, and peppermint for itchy scalp and to stimulate hair growth. If you are a ‘do it yourselfer’ you can create some very beneficial hair care products for your hair or you can enhance your store bought products by adding a few drops to them for added benefits. Usually essential oils are used very sparingly because they are so concentrated.

Here is a List of Essential Oils and Their Known Benefits To Hair:

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender Oil: Not only known for its relaxing scent, it has proven hair benefits and is good for all hair types.  Lavender oil is extracted mostly from the flowers of the lavender plant, primarily through steam distillation. It is a good treatment for dandruff and itching, helpful in controlling hair breakage and improving hair growth. Most widely known to treat alopecia areata, a condition where you lose excessive hair, especially in patches. Daily massage with lavenderoil has proven to help significant re-growth and gives you the results in a few months. Lavender oil blends well with many other essential oils including jojoba, rosemary and tea tree oils.

Chamomile Oil:  Is known to  soothe the nerves  and it does the same for your hair and scalp, in fact it is the most soothing of the essential oils for the hair and scalp. Chamomile helps to retract skin cells that have been inflamed from chemical procedures, and harsh weather conditions and helps with itching scaly scalp and dandruff.

Myrrh Oil: Is known to be very good for dry hair. It helps with the treatment for dry scalp, dandruff problems and under-active sebaceous glands. Use instead of lemon oil if your hair is not oily.

Peppermint Oil: Is known to help stimulate blood flow to the root of the hair. This is very important for hair as it helps the hair to receive proper nourishment. This in turn will lead to hair growth. That tingly feeling when peppermint oil is felt on the scalp is actually the stimulation of  blood flow to hair.

Lemon OilIs known to especially be beneficial for oily hair, it is recommended that persons with dry hair not use lemon oil, it is a good treatment for dry scalp, dandruff, lice, and under-active sebaceous glands.

Rosemary Oil – Is another oil which doubles as a fragrant oil and an essential oil. The oil is derived from the rosemary plant and is very useful for dandruff problems and flaky itchy scalp. Rosemary oil stimulates the hair follicles; as a result hair, can grow longer and stronger.

Tea Tree Oil: is a great moisturizer for the hair, it helps to keep the scalp free of bacteria and fungal problems. Tea tree oil unblocks the sebaceous glands and encourage the flow of the scalp’s own moisturizing oils while clearing away dead skin cells. Tea tree oil mixed with other essential oils is especially good as a scalp treatment for relieving dandruff.

There are several other essential oils that can be used for various hair and scalp conditions. The beauty about essential oils is that once you find one that is good for your hair you can stick with it and you will continue getting great results.

Support Small Salon’s | Hair Salon Near Saint Cloud, Mn | Hair Salon In Saint Joseph, Mn | Elise Marcus Salon

I’m sure a lot of you have been there, the busy walk-in hair salons. You walk in and hopefully you were welcomed pleasantly enough and hopefully you didn’t have to wait very long before you were wisked back to a station for your brief consultation on what you would like to do with your hair. Maybe you got the haircut you wanted, maybe not. The thing is that those salons are not designed to give you personal one on one attention. It isn’t the stylists fault really, the faster they cut your hair the more money they make. Can you blame them?

It might be time for you to get away from the large impersonal hair salons.  The trick is to find a small one person salon who will cater to your specific needs and more importantly will listen when you have concerns.  The hair salons that take walk-ins can be ultra busy and really don’t have time to give you the personal attention that you need.   Finding that one stylist that will give you their undivided attention makes you feel even better than just the new hair-do.  The “Mom and Pop” type salons where you receive personalized service by the owner, the one person who must perform to high standards, because his/her business depends on it.  In bigger salons, it is easier for the hair stylist to cast off questions and client desires, because he/she will always have more clients. Wouldn’t you rather have a stylist that takes a personal interest in what you want?
Developing a relationship with your hair stylist is very important.  A good hair stylist will study your hair and ask you questions about what you like and don’t like about your hair so they can help you achieve the best style for you. When you have a stylist that takes a personal interest in how you look and feel, that is when you get the quality hair treatment and service you are  paying for.

Ain’t Nobody got Time for That | Hairstyling Saint Joseph, MN | Elise Marcus Salon

You know that one person who looks perfect no matter what they do? Like, they always have nice hair, and they do their make up every day with out fail.  You look at their style and think that maybe you’d like to do that.. but then you realize ain’t nobody got time for that.

But you do! Time is no longer an excuse to give up without trying.  You do have the time, resources and skills to have nice things.  I will be starting a series on quick styles that are totally easy and adaptable, so feel free to try a couple out 😉

Nice Buns

Estimated Time: 3 minutes

1. Put your hair in a pony tail at the desired height.  Personally, I suggest setting it at the crown of your head, so it looks like an extension of your head.

2.  Spin your hair around while twirling it into the signature donut-bun shape and pony tail it again.  I suggest pony tailing this time with hair rubber bands, so it does not look so too tied down. Buns are not perfect… Go ahead and take that both ways.

3. Pin the little hair chunks that fall out with a couple of bobby pins.

TA DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You did it!

Get That Healthy Look | Hair Styling in Saint Joseph, MN | Elise Marcus Salon

A few days I talked about ways which will help you grow your hair out long, but how good is long hair if it is rough and lacking shine? There are a few tips and trick you can use to get softer, more healthy looking hair.

I like to look at hair care a lot like skin care.  If you want it to be moisturized and soft, you have to protect it from hot surfaces as well as cold surfaces, use a conditioner or moisturizer, and nurse the parts of it which may not be in the best of health.  With this in mind, the steps become easier than you may have originally thought.

I have talked a lot about heat damage (and so has every other hair care source, I’m sure), but people often disregard the damaging effects extremely cold conditions can also have.  Cold air, such as in the winter time or the lowest setting on the blow-dryer, can just as easily make hair brittle and without luster.  Just as it is damaging to skin, it is damaging to your hair.  The softest hair comes from conditioners which boost your natural moisturizer and smoothness.  Unfortunately, there is no better way to discern which product you should you for your particular needs than trying one at a time until your are satisfied.  I can suggest, however, that you look for products without plastics and fillers because they weigh down or even suffocate your natural shine, leaving it dull and harsh.  One more trick you can make use of to keep your hair soft and in good health is to “go easy” on the already damaged parts.  Continuing with the skin-to-hair analogy, constantly straightening, shampooing, coloring, perming, etc. is like the men and women who work as auto mechanics or construction workers who do not wear gloves or use lotion and are constantly exposing their skin to harsh conditions.  Their skin is usually rough and damaged.  But luckily the solution is very easy! If at all possible, cut back on their use and keep up regular hair cuts to cut away the rough split ends.

Growing nice long hair | Hair Styling in St Joseph, Mn | Elise Marcus Salon

A couple of days later but I’m back with some pointers for growing long, strong beautiful hair. If you are serious about growing your hair out you want it to be as healthy as possible. I’m going to share with you some time tested do’s and do not’s for getting and keeping your hair healthy.

One of the biggest things is not shampooing your hair everyday. You should try to shampoo your hair as little as possible because shampoos actually strip your hair of its natural oils. If you are one to shampoo your hair everyday you can start by changing to every other day and from there going to every third or fourth day. I’m not saying don’t shower, just don’t shampoo your hair.

Brushing your hair is a good way to stimulate your scalp and also move natural oils from your scalp to the rest of your hair. Make sure you only brush your hair when it is dry. When your hair is wet it is weaker and easier to break. It is best to use a wide tooth comb to detangle your hair when it is wet. After your hair is dry you can use a brush if needed.

Heat styling your hair causes a lot of damage. Blow drying and ironing your hair zaps it’s moisture. If you do need to use a blow dryer or iron on your hair there are products that can protect your hair from heat damage. The best thing to do is to let your hair air dry. You can keep your hair wrapped in a towel until it’s done dripping and then let it dry naturally the rest of the way.

These are some of the most important things to do when you are trying to grow your hair long. Next time I will talk about ways to style and color your hair without damaging it.

This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things | Hair Styling in Saint Joseph, MN | Elise Marcus Salon

I’m sure we’ve all seen that one guy or girl on the bus whose hair is horribly atrocious. Think about bad hair, and then imagine even worse.  We DO NOT want you to ever be that guy. Do you ever wonder why you get split ends, and are then required to get a haircut? This is especially frustrating when you are trying to grow it out, isn’t it? Well, the reason we can’t have nice things (nice hair) is because we do not give it a chance to be natural and healthy.

Many environments, conditions and accents effect and even damage our hair.  Heat, the products we use, when we brush our hair, and how often we get perms or other chemical treatments (like changing up your color) can prohibit us from having nice things. It is no secret heat is damaging to hair and can cause severe dryness and split ends.  Curling, straightening, blow-drying, crimping, etc. Another reason your hair might be falling short is the products you use to keep it up.  Shampoos and conditioners sometimes have plastics and “fillers” in them which actually damage your hair and scalp.  Brushing your hair is good for it!  It moves the natural oils from your scalp down the strands of your hair, and it keeps the strong and healthy strands in place and untangled.  By brushing your hair daily, it will become less greasy and easier to handle.  Perming, coloring and other chemical treatments inevitably damage your hair to some extent.  But to cut down on their damaging effects, one thing is simple: do not do them as often.  About every four to six months is the best range.

Tune in for tomorrow’s blog on how we can get nice things!
